Ongewenste bondgenoten tegen Wilders: De werkgevers 12/11 [NL]

Moeten we er blij mee zijn?
De werkgeversorganisaties (VNO-NCW èn de MKB van het midden- en kleinbedrijf) doen ook een duit in het paniekzakje dat "Wilders Komt!" heet. De NRC doet kond van  een uitspraak van het "gezamenlijk beleidsbureau" van deze organisaties:

Met de PVV in de regering komt volgens ons de continuïteit van het bestuur in gevaar. En instabiliteit is schadelijk voor het Nederlandse bedrijfsleven. Het is niets minder dan onze taak om dan aan de bel te trekken.”

Ja, dat is natuurlijk de taak van de werkgeversvertegenwoordiging. Waarschuwen voor mogelijke aantasting van het beeld van Nederland als handelsnatie, die afhankelijk is van ongestoorde export. Zuivel naar Saoedi-Arabië, bij voorbeeld. (In concurrentie met de Denen, wier producten wegens de Mohammed-cartoons daar een tijd lang geboycot werden).
Maar het is tegelijk ook een inmenging in de vrijheid van meningsuiting en in de onafhankelijkheid van de politiek.

London must allow Wilders' agitation 14/10 [EN]

February 2009, British Government did the right thing. They did not allow Geert Wilders to come on British soil in order to spread his venomous ideas under the umbrella of the anti-European UKIP party.

Blocking an elected representative from a befriended country is indeed exceptional. But in my view, British Government set an example of integrity, ashaming Dutch Parliament, that allows a no-membership "party" to agitate on racial issues. Most parties in Holland, exception made for the left liberal D66 group as well as for the "Green-Left", are stuck like rabbits in the headlights of a Mercedes, not knowing what to do about this utterly un-Dutch Wilders movement.

Wilders is jubilating

The London Immigration Court, in condemning yesterday the UK Government decision concerning Wilders' dangerous upsetting of public order, put itself on the accomodating Chamberlain (1938) line. I hope that the UK Government will oppose that decision and continue in a more Churchillian line, blocking continental follies and preserving democracy and humanism in Europe as a whole.

But, for the moment, Wilders is jubilating.

Dutch Heritage on Manhattan: Russell Shorto honored 6/9 [EN]

Today, Dutch Minister for European Affairs Frans Timmermans granted knighthood to Russell Shorto in New York. Shorto is author of The Island at the Center Of the World (2004), a history of the early colonization of Manhattan by Dutch settlers.

I do not think that the Dutch settlers on the islands around the Hudson River really "shaped" the US. But their contribution to the fascinating adventure that are the United States of America is more substantial than is generally known.

It is 400 years ago, in September 1609, that captain Hudson and his small fleet, having sailed from Amsterdam, arrived at the river estuary, looking for a "North Western Passage" from Europe to Eastern Asia. In the following years, a small trading post and several farming villages were established in the region. Soon, after 45 years, the English occupied the settlement, but most of the originally Dutch settlers remained. Dutch names survive: Bleeker Street (Bleachers Street), Broadway (Bredeweg), Brooklyn (Breukelen, after a village near Amsterdam), etc.

Ethnische registratie van Antillianen in Nederland? En Europa? [NL]

Eén van de gevolgen van het wegzenden van Ella Vogelaar als minister van o.a. Integratie, is, dat etnische registratie van "probleemjongeren" opnieuw op de agenda van de volksvertegenwoordiging staat.

Anja Meulenbelt, senatrix in Den Haag voor de SP, schrijft daarover op haar partijblog:

In de coalitie (van CDA, PvdA en Christenunie, HR) zijn de meningen zwaar verdeeld over de mogelijke aparte databank voor Antilliaans-Nederlandse probleemjongeren - over etnische registratie dus. Nadat Vogelaar bestraft werd omdat ze op de Antillen gezegd had dat het van de baan was, werd die beslissing tot woede van de Antillianen na haar ontslag meteen teruggedraaid.
